Heart square Crochet Pattern

These heart squares are the cutest beginner friendly project to try, and they can be made into so many different things… scarves, hoods, pillows, book sleeves…

Materials used:

  • Rainbow cotton yarn fron Hobbii (or any scrap yarn you have on hand)
  • 4mm hook (or whatever hook is recommended on the yarn you are using)

Abbreviations (US):

  • CH: chain
  • SC: single crochet
  • HDC: half double crochet
  • DC: double crochet
  • TR: treble crochet
  • SLST: slip stitch

This pattern is written using US terms – skip to the end for the UK version. Stitches written in (brackets) indicate that they all go in one stitch.

Making the Heart

ROUND 1

Make a magic circle and ch3 (counts as your first dc),and add 11dc into ring.

slst into the top of your chain 3 to finish the round, and pull on the short tail end to close the circle tight. (12)

TIP: Crochet over the small tail left from closing the magic circle so you don’t have to weave it in later!

ROUND 2

Place 7 treble crochets in the stitch after the one you just slst into.

1dc, 2dc, 2dc, 4dc, you’ve done half of your heart!

The 4dc in the same stitch will create the hearts point

2dc, 2dc, 1dc.

Then make 7tr, to finish off the other rounded part of the heart, then skip a stitch and slst into the first stitch of the last round.

slst into the last stitch and fasten off.

Making the Square

Round 1

Start with your background colour in the stitch between the round parts of the heart.

In the next stitches do 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc

Work your stitches in the back loop only of the heart to create a neat boarder.

Optional: I find that I get the neatest result when I also pick up the loop that looks like its in between the stitches, but if you are a beginner this might be hard to see.

Then to make the first corner, (1dc, ch2, 2dc) – remember, brackets indicate stitches going into the same space.

In the next 6 stitches, do 3hdc, 2dc and 1tr

To make the second corner space, (1tr, ch2, 1tr).

After the corner, do 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc. Add 1sc in the chain space – this creates the point of the heart.

The rest of the round is mirroring what we have just done:

1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, (1tr, ch1, 1tr)

1tr, 2dc, 3hdc, (1dc, ch2, 1dc)

1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, and slst into the top ch3 to finish the round (36)

Round 2

I work this round using half double crochets, but you can also use double crochets if you want the square to be a bit bigger.

Ch2 (counts as 1hdc) then 1hdc in each stitch to corner space (should be 4 more hdc).

In the corner space, 2hdc ch2 2hdc

Then keep going with 1hdc in each space on the sides and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the corners for the whole round.

There should be 8dc on each side (not counting the corner stitches).

Making It Bigger…

You can finish here or keep going to make the square bigger – do as many rounds as you’d like by continuing with 1hdc in each stitch on the sides and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) for the corners.

I hope you enjoy making these lil heart squares into many cute projects… If you have any questions, drop me a message on insta – @earthyina, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible <3

About

Heya, Ina here! I’m who’s writing the words you’re reading…

I grew up in the Balkan mountains, where knowledge of herbs and wild plants was just part of everyday life, passed down through the people and landscapes around me. These days I write about herbalism and slow living, woven with folklore, magick, and spirituality, – and the occasional cozy crochet pattern – from my little corner of the internet.

I hope you find something here that brings you joy <3
